FC Schalke 04 e.V. supervisory board made an important decision on July 30, 2023. They mutually agreed with Dr. Bernd Schröder to terminate his CEO contract, which will be effective starting from July 31, 2023.
Schröder's commitment to the club is commendable. He has graciously offered his availability in an advisory role until the end of the year, ensuring a smooth transition. This demonstrates his dedication to maintaining a seamless handover process and leaving no room for disruptions.
Axel Hefer, chairman of the supervisory board stated: “The supervisory board and Bernd Schröder have been in intensive consultation over recent weeks regarding the future of the cooperation. As a result, the decision has been taken to make a personnel change at the top of the executive board. On behalf of the entire club, I would like to thank Bernd for his great commitment and for the work he has carried out. I wish him all the best for the future, both professionally and privately.”
Dr. Schröder joined the Schalke 04 team as the new chairman of the board on January 1st, 2022. In addition to his role as chairman, he also took charge of various key departments including strategy, sales, marketing, IT/Digital and communication. With Dr. Schröder's expertise and leadership, we were confident in driving growth and success for Schalke 04 in these critical areas.

During this time, we were able to lead the club with levelled heads, develop new strategies and introduce important measures which will be important for the medium- and long-term development of the club. The club’s best asset remains its 175,000 members and millions of fans. Thank you all for supporting Schalke 04 day in, day out. It’s something I’ll never forget,” said Schröder as he says goodbye to the club that has held such significance for him throughout his time here, it is evident how deeply it has impacted him.
Christina Rühl-Hamers, who holds the position of chairwoman of finance, staffing, and law, along with Peter Knäbel, chairman of sport, will temporarily take on the responsibilities on the supervisory board. This arrangement ensures seamless operations until further notice.
